It artfully traverses digital ecosystems, generates thoughtful actions, and learns how to independently cast votes on the future of your civilization. Sounds cool, right? Ubisoft's experiment with AI agents in Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E. is a bold step in that direction, but it raises some serious questions about where we're headed.

AI Taking Over Our Digital Selves?

Ubisoft's foray into AI is fascinating. NFT-linked AI personalities that engage in governance, self-guided gameplay even while you’re not logged in… This isn't just about making games more convenient; it's about exploring how AI can become an integral part of our digital identities. Think about it: Your AI agent could be your tireless advocate in the metaverse, always acting in your best interests, learning from your behavior, and evolving alongside you.

Here's where things get tricky. If these AI agents ever get advanced enough to make decisions for us, are we really in the driver’s seat at that point? What will occur when our AI’s “values,” determined by the algorithm, data and learning methods selected, begin to differ from ours? This echoes to me the early days of social media. We quickly adopted social media platforms that furthered the idea of a connected world, telling us what we wanted to hear and making us addicted to a faceless feedback loop of approval. Are we setting ourselves up to make the same mistake with AI?

Trust And Transparency Or Black Box?

Ubisoft is really leaning into the whole transparency thing too, pointing out that every AI agent decision will be saved on the blockchain. Good. Transparency is crucial. But blockchain or not, can the average gamer actually grasp how these AI agents are forming their plans of attack? Are they able to quickly audit the algorithms that influence their behavior?

This is where the discussion has to move from the techie stuff to the people stuff. It’s insufficient to just state “the actions are tracked on Aleph Cloud. We need clear, accessible explanations of why an AI agent voted a certain way, what data influenced its decision, and how players can challenge or override those decisions beyond just a simple player override option. In response, the company repeatedly claimed to have moderated their AI models in order to mitigate risks and avoid producing harmful content. This leads to an important question: who’s fact-checking the fact-checkers? How do we address the risk of bias built into the AI’s training dataset?

Consider the very public debates in the world about AI bias in facial recognition software. These biases can have dire impacts on our most marginalized communities. Now picture those biases in the metaverse, determining access to resources, opportunities, and even social mobility. That’s a dystopia we need to work hard to prevent.

Gamification Of Governance A Danger?

The potential for linking game-based play to civic governance is fascinating as well as profoundly troubling. Further examination of these modalities is necessary. Ubisoft is exploring shooter player behavior through Ubisoft’s Captain Laserhawk and building from these, they want to understand how these behaviors might affect decision-making across the governance system. This not only sounds like a positive feedback loop, but indeed what kind of feedback loop are we discussing?

Are we rewarding bad actors for participating in harmful activities in order to win the competitive governance landscape? Or perhaps we are turning governance into an entertainment industry. Those of us who favor a more reasoned discourse are often drowned out by the loudest and most aggressive voices. This state of affairs is similar to the widespread gamification trend in fields such as education and fitness. Rather than encouraging intrinsic motivation, it encourages extrinsic rewards, taking the emphasis away from actual learning and overall health and putting it towards just earning points.

The metaverse shouldn't be a Skinner box. Rather it should be a place that values purposeful engagement, impactful collaboration, and unique innovation. Yet if we aren’t careful, AI-powered governance could make it as easy as falling off a log for the exploitation and manipulation to occur.

The potential is there. AI agents could assist with gameplay, helping players overcome challenges and learn new skills. They could promote social interaction, bringing together people with shared values and interests, helping to create communities. We can’t run ahead and instead have to be careful and let ethical principles, underpinned by an understanding of the importance of human agency, lead the way.

And as Eloise, given my experience in metaverse and digital identity, I’d say that Ubisoft’s experimentation is a good one. It challenges us to reckon with the thorny questions of a responsible and equitable AI-infused, digital identity-driven, metaverse-laden future. Keep in mind, technology is not the answer. It has the potential to deliver fantastic advances or deep disaster if and only if we make the right decisions to use it for good.

So let’s not get too swept away by the siren song of innovation and forget about the risks. Then let’s stop pretending, and let’s have a real conversation. It will require the collaborative efforts of developers, policymakers, and users alike to steer the course of this technology, making sure it serves the needs of all rather than a privileged few.
