The metaverse is screaming for substance. We’re inundated with the tsunami of PFPs — profile picture projects. All of them promising the same community, belonging, and prospect of early retirement. How many deliver? And even more interestingly, not a lot, and fewer still have anything of real consequence to offer. Megailo’s Milady NFTs, set to go live on June 28, 2025, are the new front runner. They are meant to embody the “soul of the Mega Civilization,” a community organized around the MegaETH blockchain. Come on now, does a digital soul really exist or is that just some fancy marketing mumbo jumbo?

Artistic Merit or Milady Doppelganger?

Let's talk about the art. The Megalio NFTs are Milady Maker derivatives. That's a loaded statement. On one hand, it provides instant recognition. Milady has a particular aesthetic – a kind of deeply creepy, anime-inspired aesthetic that’s really entrancing and, for many, utterly repugnant. Is Megalio simply riding Milady's coattails? Are they pushing new concepts into the visual discourse? Or are they just putting out a new variation on the same old digital crack?

Think about it: We live in a world where AI can generate endless variations on a theme. What separates one digital artwork from another is the story it tells. It stirs passion and paints an exciting picture of a different future. Does Megalio offer that? Are these NFTs indicative of a greater culture, interest, or community beyond the immediate need to flex and show off ownership of a sexy PFP? And that’s the question we have to answer ourselves.

The visual storytelling needs to be compelling. Does it engage our imagination, our promise, our hope, our desire to belong? Or is it merely a vehicle for echoing prominent memes and trends?

Community Values or Echo Chamber Vibes?

The “Mega Civilization” welcomes you to the colorful crypto and NFT world. If you connect with the MegaETH culture/ideology, this is home! Okay, but what is that culture? What are those ideologies? Are we making this a truly inclusive space that pushes the envelope in terms of welcoming all different perspectives? Or are we simply creating yet another echo chamber, where everyone agrees and goes home and pats themselves on the back for being “forward-thinking”?

  • Inclusivity: Does this community genuinely welcome diverse perspectives, or is it just performative allyship?
  • Values: What are the core values of the Mega Civilization? Are they clearly defined and consistently upheld?
  • Governance: How is the community governed? Are decisions made democratically, or is it a top-down structure?

Compare this to the Bored Ape Yacht Club, which developed its community based on exclusivity and status. With Megalio, though, it feels like he’s shooting for something altogether different, altogether more… soulful. But soulful requires authenticity. You have to be ready to deeply engage in these conversations and interrogate the assumptions. Provide opportunities for participants to be vulnerable. Ideally, we create space where people feel safe enough to be vulnerable.

Soulful Civilization or Marketing Ploy?

With the large amount of seed funding, MegaETH Labs now has a valuation of more than $100 million. Vitalik Buterin, Cobie, Joe Lubin are among the supporters. That’s impressive. Distributed ledger technologies, including the MegaETH blockchain, which boasts a capacity of 100,000 transactions a second and millisecond latency. Kingdomly simplifies NFT creation and management. All good stuff. Technology alone doesn't create culture. It enables it.

The new MegaETH blockchain, with its dazzling potential for future scalability and lightning-fast transactions, is just the set. The Megalio NFTs, and the community they represent, are the protagonists, as they should be. The critical question then becomes, what type of play are they setting the stage for? Or are they merely repeating the obvious and predictable, without telling a story that inspires and connects with our deepest hopes and desires? Or have they gone the way of all flesh, repeating lines from a playbook that’s already been played out a thousand times over?

Joining the NFT mint provides you with automatic Whitelist access to the MegaETH mainnet launch. This exciting new benefit leads to another important question. Is this real community building, or is it just an effort to incentivize early adoption of a new blockchain? Is the “soul of the Mega Civilization” just a slick PR move to artificially inflate demand for MegaETH?

Here's my gut feeling: Megalio has the potential to be something special. The association with Milady Maker might be a double-edged sword. It gives you immediate name ID recognition, but it comes with a ton of baggage. As NFT enthusiasts know, the community has to overcome the Milady connection. It’s got to create something that is decidedly different and that satisfies our profound human craving for relationships, community, and purpose.

After all, ultimately, the future of the Megalio NFTs — and by extension, the Mega Civilization — is up to its community. Will they create a colorful, welcoming, and truly authentic virtual community in the metaverse centered around the arts, culture and music? Or will they fade away like every other blip on the burgeoning timeline of PFP crazes? Only time will tell. One thing is certain: The metaverse needs more souls, not just more pixels.
